In addition to the aforementioned performance, for varied instrumentation,
SFNM Youthfest featured premiere performances, by adult musicians, of
the winning compositions of the 2003 New Mexico Young Composers' Project. The winning compositions were chosen among submissions from
all over New Mexico:
| Andrea Pickrell, 13 | Canyon Rains |
| Daniel Washington, 8 | Comets From Outer Space |
| Richard Molina Kammeraad, 14 |
Into Paradise |
| Brian Davenport, 13 | Fandango |
| Zachary Dreicer, 7 | Cat Walk |
| Keith Allegretti, 13 | Atra Pluvia |
As part of this competition, Santa Fe New Music issued a statewide call
for submissions from composers aged 18 and younger in Fall 2002, offering
youth composers the opportunity for professional review and public performance.
As an additional educational component of the Program, Santa Fe New Music,
through Winter and Spring 2003, held workshops in various cities statewide
for students and their teachers, with an aim to help both groups understand
what constitutes a successful score submission, and help young composers
develop and hone their craft.
The Young Composers' Project was operated under the auspices of Twentieth
Century Unlimited until Fall 2002, at which time it was assumed by Santa
Fe New Music. "We are delighted to present this first SFNM Youthfest as the culminating
event of our Youth Programs for the 2002-2003 season," says Santa
Fe New Music's Artistic Director John Kennedy. "Youthfest will be
an annual event which will allow us to showcase the inspired work of New
Mexico's next generation of musical creators, while affording a wide and
diverse spectrum of audiences, youth and adult, to experience new music,
in a relaxed and accessible 'festival' environment.
"It's exciting to provide these opportunities for young musicians' musical expression. Creating opportunities for the appreciation of new music by wider audiences, particularly youth and families, is a key part of Santa Fe New Music's mission, in addition to the concerts and adult programming that we present."
